Georgina selected to represent GB at European Championships

British Gymnastics has announced that Georgina will be one of the three Senior Ladies in the Double Mini Trampoline team that will represent Great Britain at the 23rd European Championships taking place in St. Petersburg [RUS], 9th – 14th April 2012. This follows the conclusion of three selection events, the most recent of which was held at Hitchin on 4 March 2012.

In making the announcement, Martin Laws, Technical Committee Chairman and UEG Member of the Technical Committee, said “I am delighted that this year our gymnasts gave us very little to discuss and essentially selected themselves by performance alone, which is what we always like see. I look forward to seeing them all perform to full potential and bring us home some great results.”

Joining Georgina in the Senior GB Team are Robyn Osborne, who also trains at Jumpers Trampoline Club, and Mia Taylor from Hitchin Salto.

Georgina ranked 24th in World Championships, and part of GB squad that finishes in 5th place in team event

In her first appearance at the World Championships, Georgina was part of the Great Britain squad that finished fifth in the overall team standings.  In the individual competition, Georgina looked on course for a top twenty classification but a retrospective adjustment to the scoring by the judges saw her drop to 24th place. The controversy surrounded Georgina’s second pass, which after some deliberation was awarded a mark of 32.70. This publicly announced mark was then reduced to 29.90, a decision that only came to light when the full results were published.

Two official interviews with Georgina can be accessed here:

Note that the first interview took place before the judges reconsidered their decision and downgraded Georgina’s marks.

National Finals – Senior Ladies DMT
National Indoor Arena, Birmingham – 23/24 June 2011

Georgina fell on landing after her first effort in the Qualifying Round, and this prevented her from progressing through to the final stages of the competition. Her second pass attracted an improved score and allowed Georgina to finish the day in 11th place.

Taking the positives from the event, Georgina remained injury-free. Her early season performance leaves her well placed to qualify for the 28th World DMT Championships, for which there are four places available. Selections will not be made until the end of the summer, after trials at Hitchen.

Georgina will now head off to Melbourne for a few weeks, where she will train with members of the Australian team.

About Georgina Varley

Georgina Varley"I was taken to both gymnastics and trampoline classes at the Black Lion Leisure Centre, Chatham, Kent at the age of about 3 or 4. When the Jumpers Rebound Centre was built I transferred to there and within a short space of time I was asked to compete.

I've been training and competing from the age of 6 and have qualified for the British Championships every year since I was 9 years old. I started doing DMT (Double Mini Trampoline) when I was about 12.

Synchro is all about timing - you have to get right otherwise it looks untidy. Ideally you need to be of a similar build and height as your partner. There is a lot of concentration involved because as well as making sure you are in time with your partner, you have to carry out your routine properly too.

I really enjoy the buzz that you get after a good training session, and during competitions."
